What Is a Village?

A village is a group of buildings on the surface of the Overworld, home to villagers, cats, an iron golem and farm animals. Wandering traders and their trader llamas also visit from time to time.

Villages are the best early-game base you can find. They give you beds, food from the farms, loot chests and, most of all, trading. With the right villagers you can buy enchanted books, diamond gear and emeralds' worth of supplies.

The style changes the blocks, the buildings and some of the mobs. Desert villages spawn a camel at the meeting point, and taiga villages are the only structure in the game with naturally generated armor stands. Jungle and swamp villagers exist, but no village structure generates in those biomes.

What You Find in a Village

Villagers, one for each bed in the houses. Job site buildings have no beds and spawn empty.
An iron golem near the meeting point, plus cats: one for every four beds, up to five.
Job site blocks such as lecterns, smithing tables and grindstones that give villagers their professions.
Farms with crops, hay bales, and pumpkin and melon patches.
Loot chests that depend on the building, such as the weaponsmith or the cartographer house.
A bell at the meeting point. Villagers ring it when a raid starts.

Java vs Bedrock Villages

Villages are a bit more common in Bedrock Edition. In Java there is roughly a 1 in 2 chance of at least one village within 500 blocks of world spawn; in Bedrock it is about 2 in 3, because villages generate in more biomes and closer together. In Bedrock, villages also tend to have a stronghold underneath.

Iron golems work differently too. In Java, a villager that has slept can summon an iron golem. In Bedrock, iron golems spawn around the village center when there are at least 10 villagers and 20 beds. Zombie sieges only happen in Java.

How to Find a Village

Get your world seed with /seed, or from the world settings screen.
Enter the seed and your X and Z coordinates in the Village Finder above, and pick your edition and version.
Travel to the nearest result. Look for paths, farms and roofs in open biomes such as plains and savanna.
No seed? Trade with a cartographer for an explorer map that leads to a village. The village type on the map depends on the biome the cartographer came from.

Raids and Abandoned Villages

Drinking an ominous bottle gives you Bad Omen for 100 minutes. Walk into a village with it and it turns into Raid Omen, which starts a raid of pillagers, vindicators, evokers, witches and ravagers in waves. In Java Edition, a village with at least 20 beds also has a 10% chance of a zombie siege at midnight.

About 2% of villages generate abandoned. Every villager is a zombie villager, the doors and torches are gone, and cobwebs and mossy cobblestone cover the buildings. Cure the zombie villagers to bring the village back to life.

How rare are abandoned villages?

Each village has a 2% chance to generate abandoned, also called a zombie village. All its villagers are zombie villagers, the doors and torches are missing, and the buildings are covered in cobwebs and mossy cobblestone. The zombie villagers don't despawn, so you can cure them with a splash potion of weakness and a golden apple.

Is there always a village near spawn?

No. In Java Edition there is about a 1 in 2 chance of at least one village within 500 blocks of world spawn, and about 2 in 3 in Bedrock. If your spawn has none, the Village Finder shows the nearest one from your seed so you don't have to explore blind.

How many villagers spawn in a village?

Villagers spawn based on beds. Each house with a bed spawns villagers, while job site buildings like a smithy have no beds and start empty. Villages also get one iron golem near the meeting point and up to five cats, one for every four beds.

Can I find a village without the seed?

Yes. Cartographer villagers sell explorer maps that lead to villages. You can also climb high ground and look for farmland, paths and roofs in open biomes like plains, savanna and desert. On multiplayer servers where you can't see the seed, these are the main options.
