What Is a Nether Fortress?

A Nether fortress is a large structure made of Nether bricks, built from long open bridges, enclosed corridors and towers. The bridges stand on pillars that reach down into the lava sea, so fortresses are easy to spot from a distance when they aren't buried in netherrack.

Every serious survival world needs one. Blazes drop the blaze rods you need for brewing stands and eyes of ender, wither skeletons drop the skulls you need to summon the Wither, and Nether wart grows in the fortress gardens.

Fortresses use their own spawn list, whatever biome they are in. Blazes and wither skeletons spawn nowhere else in the game. In Java Edition, fortresses surrounded by soul sand valley or warped forest spawn mobs much faster, because those biomes spawn few hostile mobs of their own.

Chests also hold copper and iron horse armor, flint and steel, golden swords and golden chestplates. The rib armor trim smithing template only comes from Nether fortress chests.

Where Nether Fortresses Generate

In every Nether biome, including the basalt deltas.
The Nether is split into regions of 432×432 blocks in Java and 480×480 blocks in Bedrock. Each region gets either one fortress or one bastion remnant, never both.
A 4-chunk strip on the south and east edges of each region stays empty, leaving 368×368 blocks in Java and 416×416 in Bedrock where the structure can start.
Each region has a 40% chance of a fortress in Java and a 33.3% chance in Bedrock. If a bastion tries to generate in basalt deltas, a fortress generates instead.
Fortresses can be buried in netherrack. The corridors stay hollow, but the outside can look like plain tunnels.

How to Find a Nether Fortress

Get your world seed with /seed, or from the world settings screen.
Enter the seed and your coordinates in the Nether Fortress Finder above, and pick your edition and version. Use your Nether coordinates, not your Overworld ones.
Travel to the nearest result. Build a bridge over lava lakes and bring fire resistance potions.
No seed? Explore along the lava sea and look for dark Nether brick bridges on tall pillars. If you find a bastion instead, the next fortress is in a neighbouring region.

Fortresses win 40% of the time in Java and 33.3% in Bedrock, plus every region where a bastion would land in basalt deltas. So you'll usually pass a few bastions before finding a fortress without a seed tool.

What is the wither skeleton skull drop chance?

A wither skeleton killed by a player has a 2.5% chance to drop its skull. Each level of Looting adds 1%, so Looting III gives 5.5%. You need three skulls to summon the Wither, so most players farm wither skeletons in a fortress with a Looting sword.

How many blaze spawners does a Nether fortress have?

A fortress can have up to 2 blaze spawner platforms, found on the open bridges as small fenced platforms with stairs leading up to them. Blazes also spawn naturally anywhere inside the fortress, so even a fortress without a spawner is a source of blaze rods.

Can a Nether fortress be next to a bastion remnant?

Each region holds only one of the two structures, but they can end up close together when they generate near the shared border of neighbouring regions. Two fortresses can also generate close together or even overlap, which makes one very large fortress.

Do I use Nether or Overworld coordinates in the finder?

Use your Nether coordinates. Fortresses are in the Nether, so the finder works on Nether positions. If you only know your Overworld position, divide X and Z by 8 to get the matching Nether position, then search from there.
