End Gateway: Quick Answer
Out on the outer End islands, End gateways generate naturally, and stepping into one sends you straight back to the End platform near the main island. Enter your seed and your End X and Z above to get the gateways nearest to you, so you can explore far out for end cities and still get home. Gateways on the main island are different: up to 20 appear in a ring 96 blocks from the center, one each time you defeat the ender dragon, and they send you out to the outer islands.

How to Find the Nearest End Gateway
Out on the outer End islands, end gateways also generate naturally. These don't take you further out: they always send you back to the End platform near the main island, which makes them a handy way home when you're far out exploring end cities or stuck without pearls. This finder lists the ones nearest to you.
- Get your coordinates in the End: press F3 in Java Edition, or turn on Show Coordinates in the world settings in Bedrock Edition.
- Enter your world seed, your X and Z, and your game version in the finder above.
- Head to the closest gateway in the results. Look for a small bedrock structure with the gateway block in its middle.
- Throw an ender pearl into the gateway block, or fly in with an elytra, to go back to the main island.
What Is an End Gateway?
An end gateway is a small portal in the End, a single gateway block surrounded by bedrock with a purple beam shooting up and down. Gateways around the main island send you out to the outer End islands, where the end cities, end ships and elytra are. Without one, the only way out there is bridging across the void.
Each gateway on the main island is linked to a second gateway on the outer islands. Using that second gateway brings you straight back to the main island, so a gateway works as a two-way road once it has been used.

Every time the ender dragon dies, one new gateway spawns around the edge of the main island. They form a circle 96 blocks from the center at Y 75, evenly spaced, until all 20 exist. Killing the dragon after that doesn't add more. The positions are the same in every Java Edition world (the table below); only the order they appear in depends on the seed. Bedrock Edition uses the same ring, with some spots one block off.
Where an End Gateway Takes You
The first time a main-island gateway is used, the game creates its partner on the outer islands. In Java Edition it draws a line 1,024 blocks long from the center of the End, through the gateway, in the same direction. If the chunk at the end of that line has land in it, the line is shortened 16 blocks at a time (down to 768 blocks) until it reaches empty void; then it is lengthened 16 blocks at a time (up to 1,280) until it hits land. The game picks an end stone spot in that chunk, or builds a small island if there is none, and places the exit gateway about 10 blocks above the ground.
Once a gateway has been used, its exit is fixed for good. Bedrock Edition places the exit with a different method, so the exact spot can differ from Java.
How to Use an End Gateway
- Defeat the ender dragon. A new gateway appears near the edge of the main island with a purple beam.
- Walk or fly to it. The bedrock around the gateway block blocks you from simply walking in.
- Throw an ender pearl into the gateway block, or fly into it with an elytra, to teleport to the outer islands.
- To come back, use the gateway that appears where you landed. It always returns you to the main island.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find an End gateway?
Out on the outer End islands, enter your seed, version and your End X and Z in the End Gateway Finder above. It lists the gateways nearest to you, closest first, within 3,000 blocks. Head to those coordinates and look for a small bedrock structure with the gateway block in its middle. Gateways on the main island are easier: they appear on its edge, 96 blocks from the center, after you defeat the ender dragon.
What does an End gateway do?
It teleports you within the End. A gateway on the main island sends you out to the outer End islands, where the end cities and elytra are. Gateways on the outer islands send you back toward the main island, so you can explore far out and still get home without bridging across the void.
How many End gateways are there in Minecraft?
Up to 20 gateways can appear around the main End island, one each time the ender dragon is defeated. After the 20th, killing the dragon again adds no more. Each of those 20 also has a partner gateway on the outer islands, and more return gateways generate naturally in the End Highlands.
Why can't I find an End gateway?
Gateways on the main island only appear after you defeat the ender dragon, so a new End has none. Once the dragon is dead, look around the edge of the main island at Y 75, about 96 blocks from the center: the new gateway shoots a purple beam for a few seconds when it appears.
How do you get into an End gateway?
The gateway block is boxed in by bedrock, so you can't walk in. Throw an ender pearl into the gateway block, or fly into it with an elytra, and you teleport to the outer End islands. Some players also build a water channel to swim in, but an ender pearl is the easiest way.
Are End gateways in the same place in every world?
The 20 spots around the main island are the same in every Java Edition world: a ring 96 blocks from the center at Y 75. Bedrock uses the same ring, with a few spots one block off. What changes with the seed is the order they appear in as you kill the dragon, and where each one leads on the outer islands depends on the terrain out there.
Where do End gateways take you?
A main-island gateway sends you outward in the same direction it sits from the center, to the outer End islands. In Java Edition the exit lands on the edge of the first island it finds between 768 and 1,280 blocks from the center, and if there's no land it builds a small island. The gateway that appears there brings you back.
