Diamond Ore: Quick Answer
Diamond ore generates from Y 16 down to Y -63 and gets more common the deeper you go. It is most common at Y -58 and Y -59, just above the bedrock layer. You need an iron pickaxe or better to mine it, and Fortune III raises the average to 2.2 diamonds per ore. Enter your seed and coordinates above to get the exact location of the nearest diamond veins.

What Is Diamond Ore?
Diamond ore is a rare ore that generates deep underground and drops diamonds when mined. Diamonds make the best tools and armor before netherite, the enchanting table, and the jukebox, so finding your first vein is one of the biggest steps in a survival world.
There are two versions of the block. Regular diamond ore replaces stone, andesite, diorite, granite and tuff. Deepslate diamond ore replaces deepslate, and tuff below Y 0. Because diamonds are more common the deeper you go, deepslate diamond ore is the one you will see most often.
Best Y Level for Diamonds
| Generation batch | Blobs | Y range | Next to air |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small veins | 7 per chunk, 1 to 5 ores | Y 16 to Y -63 | 50% chance to skip each ore |
| Large veins | 1 every 9 chunks, 1 to 23 ores | Y 16 to Y -63 | 70% chance to skip each ore |
| Medium veins (buried) | 4 per chunk, 1 to 10 ores | Y 16 to Y -63 | Never generate next to air |
| Medium veins (deep) | 2 per chunk, 1 to 10 ores | Y -4 to Y -63 | 50% chance to skip each ore |
Since 1.18 (Caves & Cliffs Part II), diamond ore follows a triangle-shaped distribution: almost none near Y 16, and more and more as you go down. Deepslate diamond ore is most common at Y -58 and Y -59.
Those two levels are the sweet spot because they sit right on top of the bedrock layer, which fills Y -64 to Y -60. Mining a 2-block-high tunnel with your feet at Y -59 covers both of the best levels without digging into bedrock.
Before 1.18 the world stopped at Y 0, and diamonds were most common between Y 5 and Y 12. If you play an old version, pick it in the version menu above so the finder uses the old generation.
Mining Diamonds and Fortune
Diamond ore only drops diamonds when mined with an iron, diamond or netherite pickaxe. A wooden, stone, copper or golden pickaxe breaks it and drops nothing, so never mine it with the wrong tool. Each ore drops 1 diamond and 3 to 7 experience.
A Silk Touch pickaxe drops the ore block itself. That's useful if you don't have Fortune yet: store the ore and mine it later with a Fortune pickaxe for more diamonds.
Diamonds per Ore by Enchantment
| Pickaxe | Diamonds per ore | Average |
|---|---|---|
| No Fortune | 1 | 1 |
| Fortune I | 1 or 2 (1 in 3 chance of 2) | 1.33 |
| Fortune II | 1, 2 or 3 (25% each for 2 and 3) | 1.75 |
| Fortune III | 1, 2, 3 or 4 (20% each for 2, 3 and 4) | 2.2 |
| Silk Touch | The ore block itself | - |
How to Find Diamonds
- Get your world seed with /seed, or from the world settings screen.
- Enter the seed and your X and Z coordinates in the Diamond Finder above, then pick your edition and version.
- Go to the nearest result and dig down in a staircase, never straight down, to the Y level shown.
- Clear the blocks around the vein before mining it, and pour water on any lava nearby so no diamonds fall in.
- No seed? Branch mine instead: dig a 2-block-high tunnel at Y -59 with side tunnels every few blocks, and explore any caves you break into at that depth.
Tips for Mining Safely
- Carry a water bucket. It turns lava into obsidian or cobblestone and puts you out if you catch fire.
- Bring 2 or more pickaxes, food, torches and some armor before a long trip down.
- Diamond ore is less likely to generate next to air, but it doesn't care about water or lava, so it often shows up on the walls of underground water pockets.
- Mine around the whole vein. Ores in a vein can connect diagonally.
- Keep a separate Fortune III pickaxe for diamonds and use a Silk Touch or plain pickaxe for everything else.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Y level is best for diamonds?
In Minecraft 1.18 and later, diamond ore is most common at Y -58 and Y -59. That's just above the bedrock layer, which runs from Y -64 to Y -60. A 2-block-high tunnel with your feet at Y -59 covers both levels. Diamonds still generate anywhere from Y 16 down, but they get rarer the higher you go.
What pickaxe do you need to mine diamonds?
You need an iron pickaxe or better: iron, diamond or netherite. Mining diamond ore with a wooden, stone, copper or golden pickaxe breaks the block but drops nothing, so you lose the diamond. Use a Fortune pickaxe to get more diamonds per ore, or Silk Touch to collect the ore block and mine it later.
How many diamonds does Fortune III give?
With Fortune III, each diamond ore drops 1 to 4 diamonds, with a 20% chance each for 2, 3 or 4. That averages 2.2 diamonds per ore, more than double the 1 diamond you get without Fortune. Fortune II averages 1.75 and Fortune I averages 1.33.
Why is deepslate diamond ore more common than regular diamond ore?
Diamond ore becomes deepslate diamond ore whenever it replaces deepslate, or tuff below Y 0. Since diamonds are much more common deep down, where the world is made of deepslate, most of the diamond ore you find is the deepslate version. Both drop the same diamonds.
Did diamond levels change in 1.18?
Yes. Before 1.18 the world bottom was Y 0 and diamonds were most common between Y 5 and Y 12. Caves & Cliffs Part II extended the world down to Y -64 and moved diamonds into a triangle distribution that peaks near the bottom, which is why the best level is now Y -58 or Y -59.
