What Is a Pale Garden?

A pale garden is a gray, washed-out forest biome. Tall pale oak trees fill it, with pale moss on the ground and pale hanging moss dangling from the branches. The water, sky and blocks all look desaturated, and no music plays inside: if a track is playing when you walk in, it fades to silence.

Pale gardens arrived in Java Edition 1.21.4 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.50, along with the creaking. Regular passive mobs don't spawn here, but hostile mobs can, sometimes even in the daytime under the thick leaves.

How the Creaking Works

Creakings spawn at night from active creaking hearts inside pale oak trees. A creaking can't move while a player in Survival or Adventure can see it, so it only creeps forward when you look away.

The creaking heart protects its creaking from all damage. To get rid of it, find the heart in the nearby pale oak trunks and break it. Hitting a creaking at night makes its heart grow resin clumps on the surrounding pale oak logs, which you can collect.

Mining a creaking heart without Silk Touch drops 1 to 3 resin clumps. With Silk Touch you keep the heart itself, and you can place it between two pale oak logs to make your own.

Where Pale Gardens Generate

Inland in temperate regions with very high humidity.
Almost always next to a dark forest.
Usually on high terrain like plateaus and mountain slopes, so meadows and groves often border them.
Sometimes next to birch forests, jungles and old growth taigas.
Most are small, but some stretch for hundreds of blocks.
Lush caves, dripstone caves and the deep dark often generate underneath.

Eyeblossoms are flowers that grow in pale gardens. They open at night and close during the day. An open eyeblossom crafts into orange dye and a closed one into gray dye, so the time you pick them matters if you want a specific color.

Do animals spawn in the pale garden?

No. Regular passive mobs like cows, sheep and pigs don't spawn naturally in the pale garden. Hostile mobs do, and the thick canopy can keep it dark enough for them to appear during the day. Creakings are separate: they come from creaking hearts at night, not from normal biome spawning.
