What Is a Dappled Forest?

A dappled forest is an autumn-colored biome covered in poplar trees. Their canopies are so wide they hide most of the ground from above. The grass is a saturated orange, and biome-tinted leaves like oak and acacia turn bright orange too.

Mojang based the biome on autumn trees in Michigan, USA, and in Sweden. It was announced at Minecraft Live in May 2026 and added with the third game drop of 2026.

Blocks and Features

Shelf mushroomsGrow on the sides of poplar trunks and fallen poplars.
Ground coverCoarse dirt, leaf litter, brown mushrooms and red shrubs.
Spruce treesVery rare, scattered through the forest.
WaterVery dark blue, almost black, with white underwater fog.

Mobs in Dappled Forests

Passive mobs include sheep, foxes, rabbits and the cold variants of chickens, pigs and cows. Glow squids live in underground water. At night you get the usual hostile mobs: creepers, skeletons, spiders, zombies, endermen, witches and zombie villagers.

Dappled forests are the only biome where foxes spawn but wolves never do. With no wolves around to hunt them, it's the best place for a long-term fox farm.

Where Dappled Forests Generate

  • In moderately cold regions with very low humidity, usually where weirdness is positive.
  • Often next to plains, sunflower plains, cherry groves, ice spikes and swamps, and often split from plains by rivers or valleys.
  • On any terrain: flatlands near windswept gravelly hills, near cold oceans, or in mountains near frozen peaks.
  • Anywhere from a few trees to a forest hundreds of blocks across.
  • Abandoned camps can generate here, usually with a poplar tree next to the tent.

How to Find a Dappled Forest

  1. Make sure your world is on Java 26.3 or Bedrock 26.50 or later.
  2. Enter your seed and X and Z coordinates in the Dappled Forest Finder above, then pick your edition and version.
  3. Head to the nearest result. From a distance, look for orange grass and a red, orange and yellow canopy.
  4. No seed? Explore cold, dry areas near plains, cherry groves and ice spikes. The orange leaves stand out from far away.

Java vs Bedrock

Trees grow much more densely in Bedrock Edition than in Java Edition. In Bedrock, the canopy can get dark enough for hostile mobs to spawn during the day, so carry a weapon even in daylight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What version added the dappled forest?

Dappled forests were added in Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50, as part of the third game drop of 2026. They were first announced at Minecraft Live in May 2026 and tested in snapshots and previews before release. Choose 26.3 or later in Java, or 26.50 or later in Bedrock, in the finder.

Do wolves spawn in dappled forests?

No. Dappled forests are the only biome where foxes spawn but wolves don't. Rabbits, sheep and cold farm animals spawn too. Because nothing there hunts foxes, it's the best biome for building a long-term fox farm. Fence in an area under the poplars and the foxes will stay safe.

What trees grow in a dappled forest?

Mostly poplars, which have light brown logs and red, orange or yellow leaves with a very large canopy. Fallen poplars are common, and shelf mushrooms grow on poplar trunks. A few spruce trees are scattered through the biome as well.

Why is the water so dark in dappled forests?

The dappled forest has the darkest water color of any biome: a very dark blue that looks almost black and is more opaque than anywhere else. Under the surface, though, the fog is white, so you can still see when you swim.

Can abandoned camps generate in dappled forests?

Yes. The dappled forest is one of the eighteen biomes where abandoned camps can generate, usually with a poplar tree next to the tent. Use the Abandoned Camp Finder to locate camps directly, since they're small and easy to miss under the thick canopy.
